Meet Derek! He’s one of the ones I mentioned before that I spent “very intentional” time with during my blog sabbatical. We actually met when I first moved to KC three years ago (so crazy). We were both involved with City on a Hill (KC’s Catholic Young Adult Ministry). He was in a men’s small group (Band of Brothers) and I was in a women’s small group (Sisterhood). Chloe and I were in the same Sisterhood group and her husband and one of friends was in his. All the connections.
Anywho, I threw an Advent party that first year and invited both groups. And that’s when we first met. Neither of us have strong mems from that night and we actually didn’t really see/talk to each other much after. We had a few other outings with our small groups, but that’s about it.
All when Derek was discerning entering the seminary, I was telling the girls in my Sisterhood group that I wanted a sem friend. For those of you who don’t know what that means (don’t worry Derek didn’t either and had to ask), a sem friend is a friend who is in seminary, who will answer questions you have about the faith, share things he’s learning, pray for you and you for him, etc. Basically just a friend who is in seminary that later becomes your priest friend (yay priesthood!). Derek for sure was going to seminary, so our groups threw him a going away party and I thought this was a perfect opportunity to finally have a sem friend.
Time went on and Derek and I became really good friends. It was so great getting to know him without anything more, a brother in Christ. This also was so freeing because I felt like I could just be my authentic self and not constantly worrying about if he liked me or not, he was going to be a priest after all :) Long story short, Derek discerned out of seminary and asked me out. Our friendship rooted in Christ really set a firm foundation for our new relationship and continues to do so. 10/10 would recommend.
Here are just a few things I love about him: his desire for truth, beauty and goodness (aka Jesus), his desire for being the best version of himself (aka the man God created him to be), his desire to help me recognize my inherit dignity (aka a daughter of God).
Derek and I dated for a year, got engaged in May, and now preparing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage in December! Please pray for us! Engagement story coming soon :)
